A Project
- To see the top 100 movies of all time, as voted on by IMDB users.

Every day, literally millions of people visit the Internet Movie Database. There are hundreds of thousands of movies in the database. One of the features of the site is that users can come and rate movies on a scale of 1-10. The top 100 movies based on these ratings is published on the web site. Most of them have received many tens of thousands of votes, and the average on all of them is above 8. This is the basis of my project. As of this writing, I'm at the half-way point, and I can say this: Even though I haven't liked every movie on the list, I must admit that without exception, each movie I've seen is excellent regardless of whether I liked it or not.

You can view the list here: http://us.imdb.com/top_250_films. This project is made possible by a great mail order DVD-rental service called Netflix. All I do is put each of the movies in a video rental queue, and as I watch the movies and return them, they automatically send me the next movies in the queue. Pretty easy.

Update: As of October 8th, 2005, after about a year and a half, I have finally completed this project (at least until another movie I've not seen makes it into the top 100.)

It should be added that since the list is dynamic, movies will undoubtedly be added and bumped from this list as time goes on, meaning that while I can get the "# of movies I still need to see" down to 0, the project will never be completed forever as movies that haven't been made yet (or I otherwise haven't seen) will make their way onto this list. In other words, I'll be doing this for the rest of my natural life. Or at least until I lose interest.
